What it means
The composition of your existing visibility
Untapped Potential is the proportion of a brand's total search impressions that were generated by category-level queries, as distinct from queries that name the brand directly. It does not measure whether the brand appears in a query. It measures, among the impressions the brand already receives, how many originate from buyers who found it without searching for it by name.
Untapped Potential and Demand Leakage measure different properties of the same impression pool. Demand Leakage measures whether an impression converts into a click, regardless of query type. Untapped Potential measures where the impression originated, regardless of whether it converted. A brand can score high on both simultaneously: substantial category-level impression volume that also fails to convert.
A high Untapped Potential score means the category is active and the brand is already appearing in it at scale, often more than it appears under its own name. Standard analytics understate this, because branded and category traffic are rarely separated in a conversion funnel report. The composition is only visible once GSC data is segmented by query type.
The commercial significance depends on how well that category-level volume converts. Where category-level click-through performance is comparable to branded performance, the volume is already being captured effectively and represents a strength to extend further. Where it lags well behind branded performance, that is Demand Leakage, and the correction sits in relevance and positioning, not reach.
Strategic note
Untapped Potential is frequently the largest of the three figures by impression volume. A brand can carry a high Untapped Potential score and still convert that volume well, in which case the figure describes a structural strength rather than a gap. Whether it represents opportunity or leakage is determined by reading it alongside Category Capture, not by the Untapped Potential figure alone.
