Share of search tells you where you stand. It does not tell you what you're leaving behind.

Share of search is a known proxy: your brand's share of category search volume tracks, with a lag, your share of market. It is useful. It is also incomplete in one specific way, and that way is where most of the unclaimed revenue in a category sits.

Share of search tells you how much of the conversation you own. It does not tell you what happens to the conversation you do not own. A business can hold a strong, growing share of search and still be leaking the majority of category demand that reaches it, because share of search measures presence, not capture.

The distinction

Share of search measures whether a brand appears in category search. It does not measure whether that appearance converts to a visit. A brand can be gaining share and losing revenue in the same reporting period, because the two metrics answer different questions.

This is the distinction Brand Demand Scan is built to make. Untapped Potential measures the share of a brand's own impression volume generated by category-level search, not branded search. In four of five sectors examined, that share exceeds 40%. Demand Leakage measures what happens to those impressions: in every case examined, the majority did not convert to a visit. A business can be winning share of search and still not know either of these numbers, because neither is visible in the metric.

Share of search is a market-level signal. Brand Demand Scan is the same category of measurement applied at the level of a single business's own search data, extended to show not just where you stand, but what you are not converting.

If you already track share of search, the next question is not whether you are gaining share. It is what happens to the share of category search that already reaches you.

Brand Demand Scan

What happens to the share you already have?

Brand Demand Scan quantifies the gap between category search presence and category search capture, using your own Search Console data.

Untapped Potential and Demand Leakage are quantified together in every Brand Demand Scan. See also the RoI² Framework.
